Question:

What is a "Root Directory Scan"?

Answer:

FinalData peforms two types of scans to find deleted or damaged data : A "Root Directory Scan" and a "Cluster Scan"

The "Root Directory scan", looks in the root directory for traces of "Deleted" and "Recently Deleted" files and folders. Since files that are detected at this stage
still maintain their information (i.e. file name, date, size, etc.), they will be listed with their original name under "Deleted Files" or "Deleted Folders".

Generally, a "Root Directory Scan" is all you need to do for recovery after simple data deletion

Some of the simple data deletion cases are as follows:

  •  Files or folders are deleted using the "Shift+Delete" shortcut
  •  Data is deleted and emptied out of the Recycle Bin.
  •  The data was recently deleted.

Note: The FinalData version 2.0 "File Delete Manager" feature will keep a list of "Recently Deleted" files, which will be displayed under a folder by the same name after the "Root Directory scan".

Procedure:

To perform a "Root Directory Scan":

  •  Select File.
  •  Choose Open.
  •  Select the drive you want to scan for deleted data.
  •  Click OK.
