Question:

What is a "Cluster Scan" and when should I do it?

Answer:

FinalData performs two types of scans to find deleted or damaged data: A "Root Directory Scan" and a "Cluster Scan"

After a "Root Directory Scan" is completed, a "Cluster Scan" can be started.
During a "Cluster Scan", FinalData takes a more thorough look at the hard disk and its contents. This type of disk examination is required in situations when:

- A hard disk has been formatted
- Files have been deleted over a long period
- The drive partition information is damaged or deleted (Drive was not booting)

After this scan, the "Lost Folders" and "Lost Files" directories will be populated with lists of files that had either damage to their directory information (i.e. file name, size, date, etc.), or to their actual file contents (partially or fully overwritten).
Since file or folder directory information is missing at this point, FinalData has no way of determining the original name of any files. It will therefore call files by the beginning cluster number where they were found.

Procedure:

To perform a "Cluster Scan":

  •  Select File.
  •  Choose Open.
  •  Select the drive you want to scan for deleted data.
  •  Click OK, A "Root Directory Scan" will start.
  •  After the "Root Directory" scan is complete, a dialog box will appear prompting you to choose a range to search the drive. In most cases the default is the best choice.
    Click "OK".
